The Quinta was superb..... The Sao Mamede park is breathtaking with wild flowers in abundance, a sea of French lavender growing wild, and hills clothed in Cistus. There were Nightingales everywhere we went (we were serenaded for two nights at the Quinta). On our walks we saw bee-eaters, hoopoe and a golden oriole. Paradise! Formerly reviewed at Top Rural

The Sao Mamede natural park is home to Bonelli's Eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus, Águia-de-bonelli), Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo, Bufo-real), black vulture, the black stork (Ciconia nigra, cegonha preta) and Great Bustard (Otis tarda, Abetarda). The area supports more than half of the species of birds that breed in Portugal and this mountain range is also home to the largest european colony of bats.
